Lives and works betwen Oslo and New York, NY
Born in London in 1990, Constance Tenvik earned her BA from the Oslo Academy of Art in 2014 and her MFA from Yale University in 2016. She has exhibited widely with solo shows in Oslo, Stockholm, Stavanger and Nice, as well as recent exhibitions in Los Angeles and New York. She has earned numerous grants and awards and has work in the collections of institutions including Stockholm's Moderna Museet, Oslo's National Gallery, Mexico City's AMMA, and the Zuzeum Art Center in Riga. Though well known for her paintings, Tenvik's artistic practice is essentially unconstrained, incorporating and integrating diverse influences and means of expression, extending from paint on canvas to textile and fashion design, music, video, and curatorial projects. Tenvik's painted works focus on heavily stylized portraiture, rendering the human form in colorful twists and curves that imbue even static figures with a vital sense of motion, and accentuate the expressive characteristics of her faces. Many works feature intersecting and overlapping forms and patterns, flattening foreground and background into a shared plane of vivid color and fusing individual figures and their corresponding moods, movements, and desires, into an undefined polymerous unit.
