Daisuke Fukunaga was born in 1981 in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated from the oil painting course at Tama Art University in 2004. He has exhibited widely throughout Japan and has had recent solo shows in New York and Los Angeles. Known for paintings of everyday scenes, Fukunaga's delicate hand and uniquely expressive color sense elicit profundity from the prosaic. From mounds of refuse to moments of respite Fukunaga transforms the mundane both in figure and object into hauntingly poignant reflections on our modern lives. An uncanninly dreamlike quality imbues much of his work, owing in part to his ability to represent depth in spaces made largely of flat components, using deliberate oscillation between swathes of softly subdued hues and moments of boldly saturated opacity to draw focus and discriminate one form from one another.
