Lives and works in New York, NY
Born in Riga in 1978, Brooklyn based artist Ella Kruglyanskaya earned her BFA from the Cooper Union in 2001 and her MFA from Yale in 2006. Kruglyanskaya is known for beautifully rendered vignettes, often featuring exaggerated, almost caricatured depictions of female bodies. She incorporates bold patterning, both in abstract backgrounds and woven into the composition of her scenes, and a highly expressive drawing style to evoke the vibrancy and immediacy of mid-century fashion illustration. Kruglyanskaya uses these characteristics to subvert the viewer's expectations regarding the relationship between her subject matter and the charged associations of this familiar, culturally anachronistic visual language.
